KARL'S VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM

Karl Neubauer    Visual Arts Program   (last updated  6/12/2016)                                                 pages 1 of 5

Please note that my designed units, which consist of several to many self contained, age appropriate lessons that are structured to an average 40 to 50 minute class time.  All units and lessons can be adjusted or combined to fit any class or camp format.  They have all been linked to the current National Arts Standards.  The best student learning outcome results come from the use of the program as a whole, but there is a lot of visual arts and cross-curricular content packed into each lesson, so that each lesson, taken alone, will benefit student growth.  All units are, or can be, modified for different levels of learning.

Unit 1   Shapeworks 2D
Shapeworks 2D is an exploration into the use of geometric and organic shapes for simplifying the elements and composition of two dimensional artwork.  As well, students will learn to recognize and isolate shapes during observational drawing or painting as well as during analysis of existing artwork.
Skills:  design, composition, proportion, observation, drawing, painting, and combining different media
Media: drawing, painting, collage, design software
Materials: construction paper, drawing paper, box board, painter’s tape, glue, scissors, paint, colored and     drawing pencils, charcoal, sharpies or illustration pens, colored markers,
Cross-curricular learning (Transferable skills):  math, writing, vocabulary, verbal expression, problem solving, critique, and drafts and revisions

Unit 2  Shapeworks 3D
Shapeworks 3D is a good introduction to sculpture and engineering.  Students work with common materials to create three dimensional solids.  They are taught to build simple shapes and combine them to create more complex 3D compositions.  The structural properties of building materials become evident as the complexity and size of their creations increase.

Unit 8   Landscape Drawing and Painting
Students will learn to create and or recognize the elements of a landscape with the intent of creating the illusion of space on a 2D surface.  They will learn about and practice using linear, spacial, and atmospheric
perspective.  They will explore and use different drawing and color media.  There are many imbedded skills based exercises involved with this unit and they are included as the need for them arrises.  Color mixing and matching, composition, brushwork, and observational skills are a few example of skills that need exercises to reinforce or enhance this learning.  If possible, students will work on a landscape outside from observation and or analyze and work from a projection.
Skills:  composition, drawing, combining different media, communication, and the use of drafts, color theory, line quality, brushwork and care, observational drawing and painting
Media: drawing and color media, ,
Materials:  drawing and paint supplies, drawing paper, news print, glue, painter’s tape, scissors, paint, stretched canvas, rulers
Cross-curricular learning (Transferable skills): photo analysis, writing, vocabulary, verbal expression, problem solving, critique, drafts and revisions, learning and using specific rules and techniques

Unit 9   Linear Perspective Drawing
This unit could be considered an exercise and I do use targeted applications during other units as exercises, but I’ve found that the subject is complex and engaging enough to stand on its own.  Students learn to draw in one, two and three point perspective.  They also learn to recognize and apply this skill to observational landscape, still-life, and figurative drawing and painting.  They are introduced to these concepts through interior and exterior linear studies which follow a step by step procedure at first and then move on to a more natural intuitive application such as a landscape, still-life, or cartoon.
Skills:  1, 2, and 3 point perspective, composition, drawing, communication, and the use of drafts, line quality, observational drawing
Media: drawing media
Materials:  drawing media, pen and ink, drawing paper, news print, rulers
Cross-curricular learning (Transferable skills): following specific procedures, writing, vocabulary, verbal expression, problem solving, critique, drafts and revisions

Unit 10   Color mixing and Theory
This unit could be considered an exercise and I do use targeted applications during other units as exercises, but I’ve found that the subject is complex and engaging enough to stand on its own.  Students learn about color different aspects of color theory depending on their skill level - from primary and secondary colors to the complexity of color in reflexions or shadows of cool and warm light.   There are many opportunities to apply this learning to finished, individual work.  Students will use a variety of color media and receive instruction in the use and care of brushes and other tools.  There is ample opportunity for experimentation and the sharing of ideas and the results of that experimentation.
Skills:  age appropriate color theory, color mixing, color media techniques, varied brush work,  composition,  drawing, communication, use of drafts, critique
Media: water color, tempura, acrylic, pastel, colored pencil,  drawing media

Cross-curricular learning (Transferable skills): following specific procedures, application of theory to practice, vocabulary, verbal expression, problem solving, drafts and revisions

Unit 11  Portrait Drawing and Painting
Using portrait mirrors and templates, students will learn proper proportion and placement of the elements of a portrait.  Then they will work in small groups to practice drawing each other from observation in a series of warm up drawings with gradually longer and longer poses.  They will learn to isolate the four major shapes of the portrait for color blocking and create analytical color portraits. Finally they will paint directly from observation (an outside model would be helpful at this stage).

Unit 11  Addition - Portrait Relief sculpture
It is always helpful to mix in a little 3-D instructions when teaching observational skills.  Relief sculpture is a good combination of 2-D and 3-D artwork.  It does require additional materials - clay tools, air-dry clay, fired clay, or cold casting materials.

Unit 12   Figure Drawing and Painting
Students will learn all aspects of figure drawing, from the gesture and contour to shading and line quality. They will work in small groups to practice drawing each other from observation in a series of warm up drawings with gradually longer and longer poses.  They will learn to isolate the major shapes of their compositions for color blocking and create analytical paintings. Cross-curricular learning (Transferable skills): following specific procedures, application of learned skills, vocabulary, verbal expression, problem solving, drafts and revisions
Unit 12  Addition - Figurative Relief sculpture
It is always helpful to mix in a little 3-D instructions when teaching observational skills.  Relief sculpture is a good combination of 2-D and 3-D artwork.  It does require additional materials - clay tools, air-dry clay, fired clay, or cold casting materials.

Unit 13  Art of Comics
Students will learn to develop characters that they can easily re-draw.  They will l learn to create fast paced comics gestures and story boards. They will practice expressing a complete thought visually.  They will explore ways of creating an individualized font and will learn to create block lettering with 3-D effects.  In their final comic strip, words and sentences are encouraged, but not necessary.   This unit is best introduced after figure drawing and portraiture, but can work without that prep with students that are already motivated to create them.

Under Construction   Units that I am currently working on
Emergent Painting and Drawing - Students learn and experiment with techniques for creating the illusion of an image that comes out or emerges from the 2-D painted or drawn surface.  This also will include an element of mixed media design.
Printmaking  I am researching and working on adapting the skills I’ve learned in etching, lithography, and silkscreen to non-toxic and more modern processes.

The Critique
Students will learn to conduct respectful critiques using supportive language and productive commentary.
They will be given critique forms with provided standard questions.  Their questions and responses will be closely monitored until they and the instructor are comfortable with the process.  A general atmosphere of kindness and security is the goal and this will be developed over time.  Critiques may be used as a tool more than once in any unit for the purpose of creating 2nd and 3rd drafts of individual and group artwork.

The Outdoor Classroom
Each of these units have accompanying lessons that use the outdoor environment.  If your facility can accommodate such work, I am happy to include them in any unit. I like to use materials from the environment as much as possible, but there may be the need for additional materials.

Technology
Many of these units have accompanying lessons that use technology.  If your facility can accommodate such work, I am happy to include them with the unit.  There may be specific software requirements, but we can usually use a standard desktop publishing format ( Micro-office, google draw, etc… )
Every unit has a slide show component.  The availability of a basic computer to projector set up is  always helpful.
